The wise fool can raise uncomfortable truths with impunity

Definition

Interpersonal dynamics often discourage good ideas from being aired, and bad ideas from being weeded out.  Nurture the role of the wise fool, who can raise uncomfortable truths with impunity.

Discussion

There is a risk that the Wise Fool role can get dismissed as a whinger (Scots = moaner).  A wise fool needs a good proportion of accurate hits for this not to happen, and the team need to be able to recognise the value of the contribution.  This can be difficult where one’s pet decision is under question.  Authority figures are particularly prone to unquestioning acceptance of their proposals or decisions, and it can take a brave (or foolish) person to question them.
